Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo comes a mesmerizing tale of power, privilege, and dark magic set among the Ivy League elite。

Galaxy "Alex" Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale's freshman class。 Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug-dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse。 In fact, by age twenty, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide。 Some might say she's thrown her life away。 But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world's most prestigious universities on a full ride。 What's the catch, and why her?

Still searching for answers, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale's secret societies。 Their eight windowless "tombs" are the well-known haunts of the rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street's biggest players。 But their occult activities are more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive。 They tamper with forbidden magic。 They raise the dead。 And, sometimes, they prey on the living。

Ninth House is the long-awaited adult debut by the beloved author of Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows。 Leigh Bardugo will take her place alongside Lev Grossman and Deborah Harkness as one of the finest practitioners of literary fantasy writing today。

A star off for being too damn long A star off cuz I miss Darlington It was also a liiiitttlle predictable, and slow。 The world-building was too difficult。 There was a lot of Leigh trying very hard。 SO MUCH JEWISH REPRESENTATION I LOVE 💕💕💕💕It should have been a stand alone。 I don't appreciate now having to read a sequel。 But all in all VERY COOL A star off for being too damn long A star off cuz I miss Darlington It was also a liiiitttlle predictable, and slow。 The world-building was too difficult。 There was a lot of Leigh trying very hard。 SO MUCH JEWISH REPRESENTATION I LOVE 💕💕💕💕It should have been a stand alone。 I don't appreciate now having to read a sequel。 But all in all VERY COOL 。。。more

Really enjoyed this -- steeped in New Haven/Yale nostalgia, yet also critical of the power dynamics that pervade the university。

Besides a few sex scenes I skipped through (audiobook) and a bit of a slow start where I didn't care about the flashbacks with darlington, I was HOOKED。 Definitely dark, definitely gory, definitely disturbing, and also really well written。 Besides a few sex scenes I skipped through (audiobook) and a bit of a slow start where I didn't care about the flashbacks with darlington, I was HOOKED。 Definitely dark, definitely gory, definitely disturbing, and also really well written。 。。。more

I am only giving this book 3 stars because the second half of the book was pretty good。 The first half was painful。 Thankfully, the second half was much, much better。 Still unsure of I will read the sequel though。

Alex Stern is definitely a very interesting character。 I think she is a bit too stubborn and at times a bit too prickly, but I think that’s part of her charm。Leigh really did a great job with weaving different genres into a one beautiful and interesting and engrossing tale。For me, the most interesting was the murder mystery and of course, the lure and intrigue of the magic and the dark side of the houses and the power they wield。Darlinkton was my favorite character and I want to know more about Alex Stern is definitely a very interesting character。 I think she is a bit too stubborn and at times a bit too prickly, but I think that’s part of her charm。Leigh really did a great job with weaving different genres into a one beautiful and interesting and engrossing tale。For me, the most interesting was the murder mystery and of course, the lure and intrigue of the magic and the dark side of the houses and the power they wield。Darlinkton was my favorite character and I want to know more about his past and his upbringing。 Overall a very powerful story about the still majorly male dominated college world, the abuse and the power they hold - the more well connected and wealthy, the more they get away with。 It’s something to definitely ponder on, although not sure what can be done about it, short of talking about it and sharing stories to expose those, who do hurt and damage others。The ending was really masterfully done and I am already waiting for the next chapter into Alex Stern’s world。 。。。more

I'm having a hard time rating this one, maybe I'll change my mind later, for now is 4 stars, maybe 3。5。I was very confused and lost the first quarter or the book, from then on, I liked it and devoured it 。Loved the main character, Stern is a real badass。 Her whole persona is very well developed and has those true antihero vibes。For my opinion, too many plot twists, not sure if I liked it o just wanted the book to stop。 I'm having a hard time rating this one, maybe I'll change my mind later, for now is 4 stars, maybe 3。5。I was very confused and lost the first quarter or the book, from then on, I liked it and devoured it 。Loved the main character, Stern is a real badass。 Her whole persona is very well developed and has those true antihero vibes。For my opinion, too many plot twists, not sure if I liked it o just wanted the book to stop。 。。。more

This book had a good storyline and I wanted to like it but it just had too much going against it。 For starters, those of you who follow me know I hate anything I consider unnecessary details and this book had a ton of them! The first 100 pages are definitely hard to get through just because of the new terminology。 But once you get most of the names and magic stuff the story is soo good。 It definitely has gore in it and also some other stuff you might want to look up trigger warnings for but I definitely really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the second book to be released。

I'm a bit late getting this review up - I read the book about a month ago。 Short version - it was a really enjoyable read。 Probably 4。5 stars for me。 Interesting characters, a different take on magic in the modern world, secret societies, some mystery twists。 Also, quick reading without any big lulls。Alex (Galaxy) Stern was an enjoyable protagonist for me。 She's a college student at Yale, but one that got there in a pretty unusual way。 Her struggles to keep her head above water while dealing wit I'm a bit late getting this review up - I read the book about a month ago。 Short version - it was a really enjoyable read。 Probably 4。5 stars for me。 Interesting characters, a different take on magic in the modern world, secret societies, some mystery twists。 Also, quick reading without any big lulls。Alex (Galaxy) Stern was an enjoyable protagonist for me。 She's a college student at Yale, but one that got there in a pretty unusual way。 Her struggles to keep her head above water while dealing with the supernatural craziness surrounding her was engaging。 I also liked her cynicism and bit of snark, though I get that it doesn't resonate for everyone。 It worked for me。Clearly a bit of a love letter to Yale (where the author graduated), the history and architecture, and the surrounding New Haven area。 A good read - I'll definitely be picking up the sequel when it's available and it's enough to make me think I'll probably pick up Leigh Bardugo's earlier work which is more YA (which I'm not usually a huge fan of)。 I hear good things about Six of Crows。 。。。more

slightly underwhelming in the middle, and the book didn’t seem v consistent, the first half was more poetic than the second half in my opinion; still loved the magic system and am looking forward to the next instalment in the series to make sure my boi Darlington is evil and thriving

Can someone please explain to me why this book has such a high rating on Goodreads?! It was absolutely boring and it lacked a lot of details in the beginning。 🙄

a very disappointing story。 as much as i love the author for „six of crows” unfortunately i cannot say the same about this story。 didn’t like the characters, didn’t enjoy the mood of the story。 it seemed like the magic didn’t fit the overall imagery and the plot didn’t encourage me to read more。

Tedious beginning but fantastic ending。

How I felt through the majority of the novel。。。。 1。5 StarsNot going to lie, I might have zoned out a few times。。。 okay, maybe more than a few times。 Did I even care enough to rewind and re-listen to the audiobook? Nope! There was too much narration and too much extra descriptions。 It's like when you have to write a 30 page essay and you're trying to exaggerate as much as you can and add all these random details。 The plot is interesting but I wasn't a fan of the execution。 I've ran into the same How I felt through the majority of the novel。。。。 1。5 StarsNot going to lie, I might have zoned out a few times。。。 okay, maybe more than a few times。 Did I even care enough to rewind and re-listen to the audiobook? Not my favorite but still a good read。 I only picked this book up because Leigh’s other books are actually my favorites。 Unlike her other ones, this book had parts that bored me or I just didn’t understand what the heck was going on。 But then it picked up and it got so intense。 I might reread this one in the future。 And will definitely watch the series when it comes out on Amazon。

I found the first 1/4 of the book very difficult to read, but after that it kept picking up and the ending more than made up for the slow start。

This book is full of unexpected twists and surprises。 It is paranormal and magic set in contemporary New Haven, and although I think the story would be easier to follow if you were familiar with Yale and New Haven it still is very well told。 A great concept, interesting characters and a great plot。

I finally finished this book and I find writing a review actually quite difficult。 The book was OK, it was somewhat slow at points and the flashbacks broke the main story's flow。 I finally finished this book and I find writing a review actually quite difficult。 The book was OK, it was somewhat slow at points and the flashbacks broke the main story's flow。 。。。more

It's not that the plot was boring or unoriginal。 The world-building was amazing and so original from what I'm used to seeing in YA fantasy books。 Maybe the story-telling was too slow this time, maybe the characters weren't what I needed right now, but I was so disappointed, especially since I read all the other books written by Leigh Bardugo and absolutely adored them。 I couldn't get into the story, I almost had to force myself to finish it and things got a little intresting only in the last 100 It's not that the plot was boring or unoriginal。 The world-building was amazing and so original from what I'm used to seeing in YA fantasy books。 Maybe the story-telling was too slow this time, maybe the characters weren't what I needed right now, but I was so disappointed, especially since I read all the other books written by Leigh Bardugo and absolutely adored them。 I couldn't get into the story, I almost had to force myself to finish it and things got a little intresting only in the last 100 pages, when there finally was some action。 Her previous books used to captivate me。 This one。。。 not really。 I will read the sequel though, whenever it gets published, maybe I will like it more。 Don't get me wrong, it's still a very good book, and I would recommend you to read it, but it can not compare to what she wrote before, at least in my opinion。 。。。more

Just boring。 The structure of the story-telling removes all suspense or dread that the author was clearly going for。 Lots of attempted horror in terms of gore, but totally hollow as a story。 Came across like a book written from a committee with boxes to tic instead of a work of passion and art。 I had to force my through it as part of a book group, but ugh, it was a slog。 The author should stick to YA starcrossed lover schlock, because her "adult" debut was terrible。 Just boring。 The structure of the story-telling removes all suspense or dread that the author was clearly going for。 Lots of attempted horror in terms of gore, but totally hollow as a story。 Came across like a book written from a committee with boxes to tic instead of a work of passion and art。 I had to force my through it as part of a book group, but ugh, it was a slog。 The author should stick to YA starcrossed lover schlock, because her "adult" debut was terrible。 。。。more

So good! I took my time finishing this book。I loved it。 And wanted to enjoy it。 This is why I prefer coming i to a series once it done。 Alex Stern is my perfect mix of a character。 I love seeing and learning of everything that makes her who she is。 And I feel so heartbroken for the life she didn’t get to have because of something that happened to her。Since Leigh Bardugo said the title of the next book is in the last chapter。 The Union of Sulfur and Sin, is my guess。 It just seems like a great ti So good! This was a highly original, intriguing read。 That being said it wasn’t until the last 1/4 of the book that I was actually sucked in。 The set up/ world building took SO LONG。 That said, this is a very rich world that I’m excited to dive deeper into in later books。 I had part of the ending spoiled to me and the book still twisted beyond that spoiler for me to still be surprised。 That’s what I call a good twist within a twist! I’d recommend this read, but be patient with it

SO good。 Didn’t know what I was getting myself into at first, but this ended up being an adventure from start to finish。 Also found it super interesting that the author herself was in a secret society at Yale。
